Popular Dreamcast website Dreamcast Junkyard have reported that Grand Theft Auto 3 is now playable on Dreamcast, via a project called DCA 3 but, but it’s not quite as simple as downloading the DCA 3 ROM and burning it to disc, as you’ll also need an original copy of the PC version of Grand Theft Auto 3 to run Grand Theft Auto 3 on your Dreamcast.
The developers of DCA 3 say that it will run on Dreamcast VA0 and VA1 models but is not compatible with Dreamcast VA2 models. The developers have also confirmed that you can save your game on a VMU, with saves taking up about 59 blocks. They recommend using a VMU exclusively for DCA3, and state that saves are stored in slot 1 of the first Dreamcast controller.
The DCA 3 project reverse engineered GTA 3 to make it Dreamcast compatible, and according to Dreamcast Junkyard, GTA 3 was originally planned for Dreamcast but was cancelled for commercial reasons, however, now, thanks to the DCA 3 project, you can finally play Grand Theft Auto 3 on your Dreamcast, some 24 years after the game’s original release on PlayStation 2.
