Gamers’ charity SpecialEffect today thanked their partners in the worldwide gaming industry for their support during the charity’s One Special Day flagship fundraising campaign in October. The initiative saw leading companies in the games industry donate a portion – or, in some cases, the entirety – of their game sales revenue generated on or around 4 October 2024. The funds will be used to further the BAFTA-winning charity’s mission of breaking down barriers to gaming and supporting inclusive game design.
SpecialEffect Founder and CEO Dr Mick Donegan said, “We are seeing an ever-increasing demand for our services, all provided without charge. The support the event receives from the games industry is absolutely vital in making sure we can continue to reach every disabled person who needs our help. Without One Special Day, we simply couldn’t bring a better quality of life to so many people across the world, and we’d like to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone involved in the event – industry, gamers and donors.”
The funds will help the charity to continue to foster connection, joy, and independence through their specialist multidisciplinary assessments, research, collaboration and resources. This year’s One Special Day also featured an extensive Steam Sale with over 90 titles and a Humble Bundle promotion. A range of other supporting activities and studio events also contributed over £100k of fundraising to the campaign. These included auctions, game sales, quizzes, golf days, football matches and challenge events.
