A ROM hacker known as Infidelity has recently released an unofficial Super Mario Bros. Maker for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). Here are the key details about this project:
Project Overview
- It’s a port of the original Super Mario Bros. from NES to SNES, with an added level editor feature.
- The project includes two versions: a straight NES-to-SNES port and an alternative version with the level editor called “Super Mario Bros. Maker”
Level Editor Features
- Players can access the editor by pressing X when starting a new game
- It allows editing of 16×16 blocks that appear at the top of the screen
- The editor can be controlled using either an SNES controller in port 1 or an SNES mouse in port 2
Development History
- The idea originated in 2019/2020 as a potential NES ROM hack
- Infidelity revisited the concept from July to August 2024, incorporating it into his latest NES-to-SNES port
Current Limitations and Future Plans
- The current version doesn’t allow editing of enemy sprites, but this feature is planned for a future update
Availability
- Both the NES-to-SNES port and the custom editor version are available for download from the Internet Archive
