Unlock the Ultimate Super Mario 64 Experience: Play with 16 Players in Co-op Mode!

Super Mario 64 now features multiplayer gameplay for fifteen players, a remarkable achievement once deemed impossible. Over ten years ago, romhackers introduced co-op functionality to the popular platformer, sparking creativity among modders. Originally known as the Super Mario 64 Co-Op Deluxe project by a group improving an existing mod, the initiative has evolved into a unified team now dedicated to this ambitious project.

Following over six months of development, Super Mario 64 Co-Op Deluxe has achieved version 1.0, highlighted by an impressive trailer showcasing its latest additions. Players can now select to play as Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, Wario, Waluigi, Toad, along with new characters Peach, Daisy, and Toadette.

The project also features various additional modifications, such as a complete day and night cycle, new game modes, and the option to personalize each character’s attire using preset designs (such as a lively bee color scheme) or by adjusting colors on specific body parts – for instance, Mario‘s overalls could be tinted raspberry – a delightful way to give each player a unique touch.

Nintendo has predominantly refrained from incorporating cooperative gameplay in its primary 3D Super Mario platform games, so it’s satisfying to witness the community take the initiative, particularly following the enjoyment of the collaborative chaos seen in Super Mario Bros Wonder and It Takes Two. The key takeaway here is probably that allowing people to bounce around as adorable characters will keep them content.
