We previously reported on the announcement of Snow Bros. 2 Special, an enhanced edition of Toaplan’s 1994 arcade platform game for PC and Nintendo Switch. At the time we reported on the game, it was scheduled for release in 2024. Well, 2024 came and went, with progress on Snow Bros. 2 Special’s release seeming to freeze, until this week, that is, when Snow Bros. 2 finally landed on PC and Nintendo Switch on April 9th and April 10th respectively.
Snow Bros. 2 originally launched in arcades in 1994, and now, over 30 years later, the game been remade as Snow Bros. 2 Special, adding brand new features and an all-new enhanced game mode.
Snow Bros. 2 Special allows up to four players to join forces in co-operative multiplayer, increased from two players in Snow Bros. Wonderland. Taking on a quest to rescue a captured princess, players will fight off on waves of minions across six worlds, each with their own unique stage hazards to overcome, before taking on a final boss.
In Snow Bros. 2 Special, you’ll pound enemies with snow to slow them down, eventually turning them into living snowballs ready to be rolled off the screen, taking down further fiends that lie in their path.
Snow Bros. 2 Special includes the original arcade mode for that authentic retro gaming experience, as well as brand new modes such as Survival, Time Attack, and Sky Run which each offer unique challenges. A new Monster Challenge mode also allows players to take control of the villains, attempting to clear each stage using their foes’ unique abilities.
Snow Bros. 2 Special has been developed by Japanese studio Tatsujin, who are led by veteran Masahiro Yuge, one of the founders of Toaplan.
Snow Bros. 2 Special has been published by Clear River Games, who describe themselves as “a publisher with love for classic retro games.” Clear River Games describe their vision as being to bring the joy of experiencing vintage retro games and revived classic game franchises to players all over the world.” Adding that they “focus on publishing high-quality classic game franchises, modern retro and pixel art games and indie games that inspire gamers and bring back great memories of the past or discover new great games.”
