Hungry Horrors is a new retro-styled deckbuilding game that replaces combat with cooking. From Clumsy Bear Studio, the game doesn’t have a set release date yet, but it does have a Steam demo available right now to sample the delicacies. There are plans to bring Hungry Horrors to mobile platforms and consoles in the future. The game is set in England and Ireland in the past where legendary monsters and figures from folklore need feeding.
In Hungry Horrors, you play as a princess tasked with feeding monsters from British and Irish folklore before they devour you. The culinary deckbuilder blends retro 2D pixel art visuals, turn-based card gameplay, roguelite progression and storytelling, gothic camp, and distinctly British humour. The game is described by the UK developer as “a culinary roguelite deckbuilder where you strategically cook and serve authentic traditional dishes to legendary monsters. Your deckbuilding skills and culinary decisions determine whether you successfully satisfy your monstrous guests or become their dinner.”
The first Hungry Horrors Steam demo includes two handcrafted biomes, six distinctive horrors to feed, two boss fights, four NPCs, and a variety of dishes to whip up. Explore non-combat rooms like the Nook, the Trove, and the Vendor as you perfect your menu. The full game will dish out at least ten handcrafted biomes, each one bringing new monsters, bosses, NPCs, and special event rooms. It will also expand the range of dishes and include a fully developed storyline that leads to a fiery final course, a showdown with a dragon.
