Zachary Matchett-Smith, known for his work on the Zac Builds YouTube channel, has created a modernized version of the PlayStation Portable (PSP) by upgrading its hardware rather than relying solely on emulation. Using a PSP-1000 model, one of the more mod-friendly variants, Zach transformed the handheld into a cutting-edge device while retaining its original charm.
The most significant upgrade is the replacement of the factory screen with a 4.3-inch IPS LCD panel boasting 1000 nits of brightness, vastly improving visibility and color quality compared to the original display. To address storage limitations, he added a memory stick adapter that supports microSD cards, eliminating the need for Sony’s expensive Memory Stick PRO Duo cards. For extended playtime, Zach replaced the PSP’s battery with one from a Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra smartphone, significantly increasing its capacity. He also modernized the charging system by integrating wireless charging capabilities.
In addition to these hardware upgrades, Zach overclocked the PSP’s CPU to its maximum supported frequency of 333 MHz. This tweak improves performance in certain games and reduces loading times, though it comes with increased power consumption. The buttons were also removed, cleaned, and reassembled to ensure smooth operation.
This project demonstrates how older gaming devices can be revitalized with modern technology while preserving their original functionality. Zach’s upgraded PSP offers an enhanced gaming experience that feels both nostalgic and forward-thinking, appealing to retro gaming enthusiasts and tech-savvy tinkerers alike.
