Othello, an arcade version of the popular strategic board game, is the latest entry in Hamster Corporation’s Arcade Archives series. This arcade version of Othello was originally released into arcades by Success over 30 years ago, way back in 1984.
Hamster Corporation had this to say about the game of Othello: “The rules are extremely simple while still requiring widely varied strategies, for fun and depth independent of luck.”
Hamster Corporation also noted the following about the Arcade Archives version of the game: “[t]his title includes features to help players practice and learn strategies, such as to evaluate your moves or to undo moves once made.”
You certainly can’t accuse Hamster of cherry ppicking big hitters for the Arcade Archives series, or of not being varied in their releases, with last week seeing the release of feline puzzler Kitten Kaboodle, and this week an obscure arcade version of Othello, a board game with a history that’s believed to date back as far as the 19th century! It dioesn’t get much more retro than that! Othello is based on the even earlier board game Reversi and is named after the Shakespeare play of the same name, and It’s not exactly an obvious choice for an Arcade Archives release, so who knows what Hamster Corporation will unearth from the Arcade Archives next?
The Arcade Archives release of Othello is available now on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4, having been released February 20, 2025.
