The indie NES scene has been very busy recently with a host of new titles being announced. The latest is an action RPG from developer Something Nerdy Studios called Former Dawn. The game is hoping to see a physical NES cartridge release and is seeing funds through a Kickstarter campaign that has already reached over $40,000. The game will also be ported to PC with widescreen graphics with both versions expected to be released in late 2026.
The game mixes several genres from action, turn-based battles and isometric exploration. The trailer showcases some beautiful pixel art that many wouldn’t feel the NES was capable of. Something Nerdy Studios has said that “Former Dawn is on track to be the most advanced NES game ever created.” It certainly looks impressive but the developer has also stated that it will need to hit the crowdfunding goal to make the project a reality as the best pixel artists and musicians need to be recruited.
Those wishing to back the project can select several different options to purchase. A basic digital package includes a Steam key for the PC version and a digital NES ROM to use on emulators or SD card NES carts as well as a few digital goodies. All of the physical carts look to have sold out already but there may be the chance of more being made available at a later date.
