Mokoko X may not be a retro game as such, but it certainly draws heavy inspiration from some retro arcade classics.

The game has been deliberately designed to appeal to retro gamers like us, with the game’s developers NAISU describing the game as “a nostalgic arcade game,” saying that “Mokoko X offers a modern twist on classic arcade games like Volfied, Qix, and Gals Panic, with unique bosses and quirky challenges. In the game, players help eight girls through absurd situations, from battling kitchen insects to overcoming mobile game levels.”

Much like Taito’s 1981 arcade classic Qix, which has heavily inspired Mokoko X’s gameplay, the game focuses on conquering areas of the screen while defending against enemies, with players needing to balance strategy and timing. The game offers three difficulty levels, and players must contend with adjusting enemies, shield depletion, and the need to meet the required screen coverage to win.

The game’s features include 32 levels with 24 unique bosses with their minions, 24 absurd stories that reveal details about the bosses and the girls, Japanese and English voiceovers for all characters, and traps, and towers, crates, plus bonus effects, an arcade mode, and live high scores.

Mokoko X was previously released for Steam, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, and is now also available for PlayStation 4&5.
