An indie developer, known as Meesedev, is creating a “Minecraft-inspired” game for the GameCube and Dreamcast, leveraging Minecraft Beta 1.7.3 as a base. Since its early access launch in 2009, Minecraft has been adapted to numerous gaming platforms, and this new project aims to replicate its block-based mechanics on retro consoles by developing a custom engine.
Meesedev has managed to fit 25 million blocks into 24 MB of RAM, achieving a render distance greater than that of some newer consoles, showcasing impressive optimization. Once completed, the game will feature original content to differentiate it from Minecraft, ensuring unique gameplay while maintaining a block-based environment.
Crammed 25 million blocks into 24 MB of RAM and boosted render distance to 12 chunks on the #Gamecube, now surpassing the render distance of Minecraft on Xbox 360, PS3, Wii U, and matches the Switch (docked). Achieved through a month of extensive optimization.#retrogaming… pic.twitter.com/0RxeTT8CLN
