Live-Action Legend of Zelda Movie Hits Theaters March 2027

Nintendo has officially announced that the live-action adaptation of “The Legend of Zelda” will hit theaters worldwide on March 26, 2027. The announcement came through Nintendo’s newly released Nintendo Today! App, unveiled during the Nintendo Direct March 2025.

The film will be directed by Wes Ball, who recently helmed “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” and is known for “The Maze Runner” trilogy. Ball has described his vision for the Zelda movie as “live-action Miyazaki,” referencing beloved filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki, while aiming to create a “serious” and “grounded” adaptation that feels real with minimal motion capture.

The project is a collaboration between Nintendo and Sony Pictures, with Nintendo financing more than 50% of the production. Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of the Zelda franchise and Representative Director at Nintendo, will produce the film alongside veteran producer Avi Arad, who has worked on numerous Marvel adaptations including Spider-Man and Venom.

This announcement comes approximately a year and a half after the film was initially revealed in November 2023. While no casting information has been disclosed yet, the global release date suggests that production should begin soon. The film follows the massive success of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which earned over $1.3 billion at the global box office in 2023.

The Legend of Zelda video game series began in 1986 and follows the adventures of Link as he attempts to save Princess Zelda and the kingdom of Hyrule from the villainous Ganon. The most recent entry in the franchise, “The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom,” was released for Nintendo Switch last fall.
