Kero Quest 64, a new 3D platformer inspired by late ’90s classics like Super Mario 64 and Banjo-Kazooie, is being developed by Stratobox, a team of veteran modders from the Mario and Zelda communities. The game features a polygonal blue frog named Kero, who embarks on a whimsical quest to stop a prince from misusing his newfound powers by collecting Magical Shards across a vibrant kingdom. The project has already surpassed its Kickstarter goal and is set for release in August 2026, with a demo currently available on Steam.
The development team includes notable figures such as MelonSpeedruns, known for Zelda randomizers, and BroDute, renowned for creating hundreds of custom Super Mario 64 levels. They are joined by 3D modeler TheRidiculousR and composer Jamphibious, bringing expertise in retro aesthetics and music to the project. The game is being published by GalaxyTrail, the studio behind Freedom Planet.
Kero Quest 64 offers over 20 open levels filled with collectibles like Magical Shards, Gold Coins, and unlockable costumes. The gameplay mirrors the movement mechanics of Super Mario 64, including long jumps, side flips, and ground pounds, while introducing unique abilities like a tongue-based grappling hook and spinning attack. Levels are densely packed with platforming challenges and multiple paths to objectives, delivering a nostalgic yet fresh experience.
The game’s retro-inspired graphics emulate the charm of Nintendo 64 and PlayStation 1 titles, complete with low-poly models and vibrant textures. A lighthearted story makes it accessible to players of all ages. The Kickstarter campaign has also secured stretch goals for a Nintendo Switch port, though it remains unclear if this will be for the current Switch or its successor.
Fans can try the demo now on Steam (compatible with Linux and Steam Deck) while awaiting the full release in 2026. For retro gaming enthusiasts or those nostalgic for classic collectathons, Kero Quest 64 promises to deliver an exciting blend of old-school charm and modern indie creativity.
