Kamiya Critiques Wii Version of Okami

Hideki Kamiya, the director of Okami, has stated that he does not recommend playing the 2008 Wii version of the game, instead urging fans to experience the HD remaster available on modern platforms such as the Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, and Xbox. In a recent interaction on social media, Kamiya clarified that the PS2 version, released in 2006, is the original and definitive version he directed, while the Wii port was handled by the now-defunct American studio Ready at Dawn.

Kamiya expressed dissatisfaction with the Wii version, citing its deviation from his original vision. While the Wii port introduced motion controls for the Celestial Brush mechanic, it did not significantly enhance other aspects of the game. Additionally, Ready at Dawn faced technical challenges during development, reportedly having to reverse-engineer assets due to a lack of access to original materials. The Wii version also drew criticism for omitting credits for some of Clover Studio’s original team members.

Fans looking to play
Okami today are encouraged by Kamiya to opt for Okami HD, which offers visual enhancements and preserves the artistic integrity of the original while providing more accessible controls. This recommendation aligns with Kamiya’s ongoing passion for maintaining the legacy of Okami, especially as he leads development on a newly announced sequel under Capcom and his new studio, Clovers.
