GOG Launches Preservation Program for Timeless Classics

GOG has officially announced the GOG Preservation Program, a new initiative designed to safeguard classic video games and ensure their compatibility with both current and future PC environments. This program aligns with GOG’s overarching mission to protect gaming history by preserving and updating older titles, many of which were developed using outdated technologies that are no longer supported by their original creators.

The Preservation Program will initially feature over 100 classic games, including titles like Heroes of Might and Magic 3, Diablo + Hellfire, Fallout: New Vegas, and System Shock 2. These games will be marked with the official “Preserved by GOG” label, signifying that they have undergone testing, updates, and optimizations for smooth performance on modern systems such as Windows 10 and 11. Furthermore, games included in the program will offer DRM-free access, downloadable content, manuals, and technical support, ensuring a comprehensive experience for players.

According to GOG’s managing director, Maciej Golębiewski, the company’s foundation rests on the preservation of classic games, and this program represents an extension of that commitment. The objective is to protect these titles for future generations while making them accessible to contemporary audiences. The program is intended to expand over time as GOG continues to enhance and update additional titles from its extensive library.

This initiative is considered a significant advancement in tackling the challenges posed by technological progress that can render older games unplayable. By maintaining compatibility and offering ongoing support, GOG seeks to ensure the longevity of these iconic titles for years to come.
