Frontier Force is an upcoming new homebrew shoot ‘em up for the Sega Master System, which is being developed by a homebrew dev who goes by the name of Badcomputer.
Although Frontier Force is still undergoing playtesting, the developer has made a playable demo if the alpha build of the game available, with a digital release of the finished game promised via itch “very soon”.
While you wait for Frontier Force’s playtesting to be completed, you can currently download a demo of the first stage of Frontier Force from this link.
Although it is yet to be confirmed, Badcomputer hopes to release the final version of Frontier Force as a physical Master System cartridge, as well as a downloadable ROM, saying that he will look into a physical release once the game has been completed.
It’s great to see Sega’s 8-bit console getting some love for once, as the homebrew scene seems to focus on Nintendo’s 8-bit NES and Sega’s 16-bit Genesis a lot more it does on the 8-bit Sega Master System, and Frontier Force certainly looks impressive, so we suspect it’s pushing the Master System to its limits, and rather impressively, Frontier Force is said to run at 60Hz on the Master System’s humble 8-bit hardware!
