From Doom 64 to WipEout: Dreamcast Ports Keep Coming

The iconic PlayStation 1 anti-gravity racer WipEout is making its way to the Sega Dreamcast, thanks to developer jnmartin84, who previously impressed the retro gaming community with an excellent Doom 64 port for the same console.

Recent footage shared by The Sega Guru on YouTube shows the WipEout port running impressively well on Sega’s final console, often hitting framerates above 100 FPS. This promising progress comes after jnmartin84 successfully compiled the first working build on March 19, 2025.

The developer has been able to apply valuable experience from the previous Doom 64 project, explaining, Everything I learned about Dreamcast for Doom 64 applies, like the library of fast math stuff I keep building up and fast polygon header manipulation. And music and sound. I started from zero with that project.

This actually represents jnmartin84’s second attempt at bringing WipEout to the Dreamcast. A 2023 version managed to run but suffered from graphical glitches and lacked sound implementation. The current iteration includes sound functionality, though some issues persist—music stops working after racing multiple tracks, and attempting to return to the main menu can sometimes crash the game.

The development process likely benefited significantly from Forest of Illusion’s mid-2022 release of WipEout’s original source code. Access to this code provides invaluable insight into the game’s underlying logic and simplifies asset management for porting projects.

This WipEout conversion joins a growing trend of fan-developed ports bringing beloved classics to the Dreamcast. Other notable projects in development include adaptations of Counter-Strike, Half-Life: Deathmatch, and even Grand Theft Auto: Vice City for Sega’s hardware.

For fans of both WipEout and Sega’s final console, there’s potentially more to look forward to, as similar ports of WipEout 2097 and WipEout 3 might follow in the future.
