Final Fantasy 9 fans have new reason for optimism about a potential remake as Square Enix has launched a 25th anniversary website teasing “various projects” to commemorate the game’s milestone. The website, which went live on March 31, 2025, mentions that “we are preparing a variety of projects to commemorate the 25th anniversary, including merchandise and collaborations.”

While Square Enix hasn’t explicitly announced a remake, the timing has fueled speculation in the gaming community. The anniversary website’s launch comes just days before Nintendo’s scheduled Switch 2-focused Direct on April 2, leading some fans to theorize that a Final Fantasy 9 remake announcement could be imminent.
Rumors about a Final Fantasy 9 remake have persisted for years, gaining significant traction following a 2021 NVIDIA GeForce NOW database leak that mentioned the unannounced project. That leak has proven accurate for several other titles, including the Chrono Cross Remaster, Kingdom Hearts 4, and the PC port of Final Fantasy VII Remake.
Last year, Final Fantasy 14 producer Naoki “Yoshi-P” Yoshida commented on the possibility, noting that Final Fantasy 9’s “huge volume” might make it difficult to remake as a single title, suggesting it could follow Final Fantasy 7 Remake’s multi-part approach. Yoshida also raised eyebrows when he included several Final Fantasy 9-themed extras in Final Fantasy 14’s Dawntrail expansion, teasing that the reason for these references “is a secret.”
