Fable’s 20th Anniversary Celebrated with Game Boy Color Demake

A fan has created a Game Boy Color demake of the classic Xbox RPG Fable to celebrate its 20th anniversary. Developed by James Grice, this project reimagines the game’s opening section in Oakvale, allowing players to experience a simplified version of Fable with a retro aesthetic.

Key Features

  • Retro Design: The demake captures the essence of Fable using an 8-bit style, reminiscent of classic handheld RPGs. It includes basic combat, character interactions, and item collection.
  • Gameplay: Players navigate Oakvale, collecting coins to buy a present for their sister before the village is attacked. The game includes choices that affect outcomes, staying true to the original’s spirit.
  • Technical Achievements: The demake features chiptune versions of the original soundtrack and even includes voiced cutscenes, a rare feature for Game Boy Color games.
  • Availability: The game can be played in a browser or downloaded for emulators and compatible GBC hardware. It takes about 20 minutes to complete.
  • Future Updates: Grice is open to expanding the project if there is enough interest, potentially adding more sections from the original game.
