Create Games For Dreamcast, PS1, And More With Retro Game Designer

A new tool called Retro Game Designer is set to revolutionize the creation of games for classic systems such as the Dreamcast, Sega Genesis/Megadrive, Game Boy Advance, PlayStation 1, and Atari Jaguar. Developed by OrionSoft, the software is compatible with both Windows and Linux platforms and aims to simplify the process of producing retro games. It allows users to import assets like background images, sprite sheets, tile maps, music, and sound effects, and combine them into a game. Once created, the game can be exported as a ROM file or CD ISO, enabling it to be played on actual retro hardware using flash carts, CD emulators, or CD-Rs.

The tool is the brainchild of Cédric Bourse, who has a history of developing games for retro systems, including titles like Elansar and Alice’s Mom’s Rescue. The crowdfunding campaign for Retro Game Designer has set an initial goal of 22,000 Euros, with stretch goals that will allow for additional ‘game engine’ functionalities. Bourse emphasizes that while the game engines have been developed over the past decade, the Kickstarter funding is necessary to create the tool itself and to customize each game engine for user personalization. This initiative is designed to cater to non-coders by providing a graphic interface that simplifies the game creation process.

The launch of Retro Game Designer reflects a growing trend in the gaming community to revive and create new content for retro platforms. By offering a user-friendly interface and the ability to export to multiple classic consoles, the tool provides both amateur and experienced developers with the means to explore and expand their creativity in the realm of retro gaming. This development not only preserves the legacy of these classic systems but also introduces their charm to a new generation of gamers.
