Celebrate Pokémon Emerald’s 20th with Stunning Art ROM Hack

Pokémon Emerald Version

To commemorate the 20th anniversary of Pokémon Emerald‘s launch in Japan, a collective of 130 artists has collaborated to create a romhack featuring newly redrawn versions of all 386 Pokémon from the game.

Pokémon Emerald is regarded as one of the most cherished titles on the Game Boy Advance, with many fans considering its visuals to be timeless. However, for those seeking a fresh experience with a classic game, Pokémon Emerald: ReSpirited offers a unique alternative by replacing the original Pokémon sprites with the newly created artwork.

There are two editions of Pokémon Emerald: ReSpirited. The Vanilla version retains the standard gameplay while incorporating the new sprites, whereas the Plus version not only includes the new sprites but also allows players to obtain all 386 Pokémon within a single save file. Additionally, this version features edits to the trainers to reflect the contributions of the participating artists.

I took a look at the Google Doc showcasing the new sprites, and I would describe the quality of the art as somewhat inconsistent. It is evident that some artists were simply enjoying the creative process without taking it too seriously. Approximately half of the sprites are faithful or even enhancements of the original art, while the other half vary significantly in quality. I encourage you to view it for yourself to understand what I mean.

Nevertheless, if you are a dedicated Pokémon fan still engaging with Emerald after 20 years and seeking a change of scenery, ReSpirited is certainly worth exploring.
