Bubble Bobble C64 Remastered is a forthcoming homebrew fan port of Taito’s all-time classic 1986 arcade platformer Bubble Bobble for the 8-bit Commodore 64 home computer. Bubble Bobble was first ported to the Commodore 64 way back in 1987, courtesy of Firebird. The aim of this new Bubble Bobble C64 Remastered project is to remaster Bubble Bobble’s Commodore 64 port to make it look even more like the original arcade version of the game. Bubble Bobble C64 Remastered is being made by C64 developer Davide Bottino, who previously produced Toki C64 Remastered, an enhanced remaster of Ocean’s Commodore 64 conversion of 1989’s simian arcade platformer. You can follow Davide Bottino’s progress on Bubble Bobble C64 Remastered over on his his X feed.
Creating improved conversions of classic coin-ops for 8-bit micros seems to be something of a trend in 8-bit home computer homebrew circles at the moment, such as the new ZX Spectrum port of Donkey Kong, on which we recently reported. We guess you could argue that the Bubble bobble C64 Remastered project is somewhat unnecessary when the existing version of Bubble Bobble for Commodore 64 plays perfectly well, but you also must admit that Davide Bottino’s improved graphics for the game are looking pretty darn lovely, and anyway, in out books, you can never get too much of Bub and Bob!
Who knows which arcade classic will be the next to see its 8-bit home computer conversion revamped and improved? Whatever it may be, whoever would’ve imagined that the year 2025 would be such a fertile time for 8-bit coin-op conversions? And as well as looking fore=ward to the finished version of Bubble Bobble C64 Remastered, we here at Retro News can’t wait to see which arcade game gets the 8-bit home computer treatment next!
