Backyard Baseball ’97 Returns Years After Original Source Code Was Lost

Backyard Baseball ’97 is set to be re-released on Steam on October 10, 2024, marking a significant comeback for the beloved game. Originally launched in 1997, the game quickly became a favorite among players for its engaging and accessible gameplay featuring a cast of memorable neighborhood kids. However, the original source code was lost over the years, which posed a challenge for its revival.

To overcome this, Playground Productions teamed up with Mega Cat Studios to remaster the game. They managed to hack a copy of the original CD-ROM and develop new game builds compatible with modern PCs. The remastered version will include enhancements such as improved gameplay mechanics, graphics, and performance. It will also feature Steam achievements and global leaderboards, allowing players to compete and track their stats against others worldwide.

While this release is currently limited to PC due to the lack of source code support for other platforms, Playground Productions has expressed intentions to expand the Backyard Sports franchise further, potentially bringing it to other platforms and exploring opportunities in film, TV, and merchandise. The game will be available for purchase on Steam for $9.99.
