An unreleased SNES game titled Mechanoids 2 – The Final Conflict has been discovered by Games that Weren’t, a group who have been dedicated to preserving cancelled and unreleased video games for over 25 years.
Games that Weren’t observe that despite that “2” suffix in the game’s title, “[w]e’re not aware of there being a prequal (sic) though!” We also tried to find an earlier Mechanoids game and similarly drew a blank.
Mechanoids 2 – The Final Conflict was to have been a side-scrolling mech fighter by Enigma Variations, with two early builds of the game dating from 1992 having been found by Games that Weren’t. The two prototype builds of the game that have been discovered by Games that Weren’t are certainly fascinating in giving us glimpse of a SNES game that never was, and while the earlier of the builds is not playable, the later of the two appears to be from a few months later, and while far from complete, it does offer playable characters, and enemies to attack. The second prototype is believed to be as far as the game’s development went. Games that Weren’t have promised to update the game’s entry on their site as they learn more about it.
Games that Weren’t believe that Mechanoids 2 – The Final Conflict was coded by Enigma Variations’ Mark Greenshields, who had previously worked on titles including the NES conversion of Kick Off, and who later went on to found Firebrand Games, who released their most recent title in 2020. But they have not yet been able to confirm this at the time of writing.
