Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition is set to launch on PlayStation 5 on May 6, 2025, coinciding with the release of its latest DLC expansion, The Three Kingdoms. This marks the first time the iconic real-time strategy game, originally released in 1999, will be available on Sony’s platform. Pre-orders are currently open, with two editions available: the Standard Edition priced at $39.99 and the Premium Edition at $59.99

The base game includes three expansions bundled in: Lords of the West, Dynasties of India, and Dawn of the Dukes. With over 200 hours of gameplay spanning 1,000 years of human history, players can explore all the original campaigns alongside the expansion content.
Those who pre-order either edition will receive the Mountain Royals DLC and 24 animated profile icons. Premium Edition purchasers get additional perks including all previously released DLCs (such as Return of Rome and Chronicles: Battle for Greece), the new Three Kingdoms expansion, and up to five days of early access beginning May 1.
The Three Kingdoms DLC, priced separately at $20, explores China’s Romance of the Three Kingdoms era. It introduces five new civilizations: Shu, Wei, Wu, Jurchens, and Khitans, each with unique units like the Wei’s Tiger Cavalry and the Jurchens’ Grenadier. The expansion features three campaigns following the stories of Liu Bei, Cao Cao, and the Sun Clan across 15 missions.
Developed in collaboration with Forgotten Empires, the DLC brings new gameplay elements including hero abilities that level up during campaigns and an interactive decision system allowing players to forge their own paths.
For multiplayer enthusiasts, the game offers competitive play with more than 45 civilizations, along with updates like Quick Play for social matches and UI improvements.
This cross-platform release reflects Microsoft’s growing strategy to expand beyond Xbox, introducing Age of Empires to PlayStation players and broadening the reach of one of gaming’s most iconic strategy franchises.
