We’ve been keeping tabs on the new Mega Drive shooter ZPF for some time. The latest news is a fabulous new demo for the PC version of the game which is currently part of Steam Next Fest. Publisher Mega Cat Studios has announced that the PC demo contains “three distinct realms to try, each with stunning 16-bit effects and layers of parallax scrolling that brings the game’s world to life.” The statement also mentions players will “face numerous mini-bosses and massive, screen-filling boss creatures, each presenting unique challenges that will test their piloting and shooting skills.”

The demo also includes three different playable characters, each having its own gameplay style and strengths. The main game is set for release around May 2025 for the Mega Drive version before a Steam, Switch and Xbox port following shortly after. The full ZPF build will include over six levels of scrolling shooter action as well as screen-filling bosses and a “satisfying score system that rewards bold players”. The package is rounded out with some beautiful pixel art and a 16-bit chiptune soundtrack that will please those fond of Mega Drive shooters of the 90s. ZPF can still be pre-ordered for Mega Drive on Mega Cat Studio’s website.
