Tetris Championship Edition drops onto ZX Spectrum

Tetris Championship Edition title screen

Tetris has been back in the spotlight since celebrating its 40th anniversary last year. Indeed, just yesterday we reported that the fantastic Tetris Forever collection was heading for a physical release. And there’s no reason why older formats should miss out on the Tetris fun (erm, apart from copyright, of course!)

Tetris Championship Edition is a new homebrew Tetris game for the 8-bit ZX Spectrum home computer, which is based on 1990’s Tetris 2, which was also released for the ZX Spectrum.

Tetris Championship Edition implements several changes to 1990’s Tetris 2. These include: a new AY tune, 50 FPS modes (t was 25 FPS before), Kempston joystick support, the ability to rotate pieces to the left (the original rotated to the right only), and more levels in Classic Mode.

Tetris Championship Edition has been created by a ZX Spectrum coder going by the name of theshich, who explains that he was titled his version of Tetris 2Tetris Championship Edition’ because it is designed “to be played in competitions similar to Classic Tetris World Championship.”

ZX Spectrum Tetris Championship Edition is compatible with all ZX Spectrum models from 48K upwards, and is available to download for free now, as a .TAP file, from itch.io.
