Shadow of the Colossus Movie Update: Still in Development

The long-awaited Shadow of the Colossus movie adaptation is still in development, according to director Andrés Muschietti. In a recent interview with Radio TU, Muschietti reassured fans that the project is not “an abandoned project by any means” and shared his enthusiasm for bringing the cult-classic PlayStation 2 game to the big screen. Despite more than a decade of delays and limited updates, Muschietti confirmed that the film has a script he “really likes” and that the possibility of making it is now opening up.

The Shadow of the Colossus movie was first announced in 2009, with Sony Pictures initially attaching Josh Trank (Chronicle) as director. However, Trank left the project in 2014, and Muschietti (It, The Flash) was brought on board. Since then, progress has been slow, largely due to challenges in securing a budget for what Muschietti envisions as a high-scale production. He noted that creating a faithful adaptation would require significant funding—ideally $200 million—but acknowledged that the game’s status as a “cult classic” rather than a mainstream blockbuster could make securing such a budget difficult.

Muschietti described Shadow of the Colossus as a “masterpiece” and revealed that he has played it multiple times despite not being an avid gamer. He emphasized his desire to do justice to the game’s emotional depth and grand scale, which revolves around Wander’s journey to defeat towering colossi in a desolate world to save a loved one. However, he also pointed out that factors beyond creative passion—such as how popular the intellectual property is—play a significant role in determining whether studios will greenlight such an ambitious project.

While no production timeline has been set, this update reignites hope for fans who have been waiting for news on the adaptation for years. The film remains one of several PlayStation IPs currently being developed for live-action adaptations, alongside projects like Horizon Zero Dawn, Helldivers, and Until Dawn. For now, Muschietti’s comments suggest that while challenges remain, there is still momentum behind bringing Shadow of the Colossus to theaters.
