Tetris NES & Tetris DX Now Available on Nintendo Switch

Nintendo Switch Online has just added two iconic Tetris games to its retro library: the NES version of Tetris (1989) and Tetris DX (1998) for the Game Boy Color. Both games became available on December 12, 2024, as part of the service’s NES and Game Boy apps. This marks the first official re-release of either title since their original launches.

Tetris (NES)

The NES version of Tetris is one of the most beloved iterations of the puzzle classic, known for its fast-paced gameplay and competitive appeal. It features two modes:

  • A-Type: Standard endless mode where players aim for a high score until the blocks reach the top.

  • B-Type: A challenge mode where players must clear 25 lines with preset obstacles on the playfield.

This version has gained a resurgence in popularity as a competitive eSport in recent years, with players pushing the game to its limits by reaching high levels like the infamous “kill screen.”

Tetris DX (Game Boy Color)

Tetris DX is an enhanced version of the original Game Boy Tetris, featuring:

  • Marathon Mode: Endless gameplay for high scores.

  • Ultra Mode: A timed mode where players aim to score as much as possible in three minutes.

  • 40 Lines Mode: A speed challenge to clear 40 lines as quickly as possible.

  • VS. CPU Mode: A competitive mode against an AI opponent with three difficulty levels.

  • Profiles and Save Features: Players can create profiles to track high scores and progress, a unique addition for its time.

  • Color Graphics: Optimized visuals for Game Boy Color systems.

Special Celebration

The release coincides with the 40th anniversary of Tetris, which was originally created by Alexey Pajitnov in 1984. To mark this occasion, Nintendo shared a special video message from Pajitnov, thanking fans for their continued support of the franchise.

How to Access

Nintendo Switch Online subscribers can play these games by updating their NES and Game Boy apps. The addition brings the NES/Famicom library on Switch Online to 90 games (79 in the West) and the Game Boy/Game Boy Color library to 36 games (33 in the West). This update is part of Nintendo’s ongoing effort to celebrate its retro catalog while offering fans access to timeless classics.
