The Edge of Allegoria by Button Factory Games and CobraTekku Games was released today for PC on Steam. The Edge of Allegoria is a turn-based 2D RPG Inspired by “the golden age of handheld gaming”. The game features pixel art, Game Boy-like aesthetics, mature humor and a vast world to explore.
The Edge of Allegoria is the debut work of Canadian game designer, pixel artist and composer Joe Picknell, who has been working on the game since 2021. With The Edge of Allegoria, he combines his areas of expertise in a unique adventure with influences from what he refers to as “the golden age of handheld gaming”.
As you can see, the game boasts a Game Boy-style retro look, as the game’s developer Joe Picknell himself grew up with that aesthetic and he knew straight away that he wanted this look for his debut work: an unusual nostalgic pixel artwork.
Despite looking like a classic Game Boy title of yesteryear, The Edge of Allegoria also offers a big dollop of mature humor, promising “swearing and big blunts” alongside the nostalgia. Well, he’s certainly got the Game Boy visual style nailed down, and you can find out if The Edge of Allegoria plays as well as it looks by picking it up from Steam now.
