The NES version of Tetris is scheduled to be added to the Nintendo Switch Online service on December 12, 2024. This release signifies the first official reintroduction of the game since its original debut on the NES in 1989. The announcement, made by Nintendo, has generated significant anticipation among fans of this iconic puzzle game.
The NES version features two modes: A-Type and B-Type. In A-Type, players strive to clear lines and achieve high scores until the blocks reach the top of the screen. In contrast, B-Type challenges players to clear 25 lines with predefined block height and speed, featuring appearances by popular Nintendo characters such as Mario, Luigi, Samus, and Pit.
This addition is part of Nintendo’s continuous efforts to enhance its retro gaming catalog available through the Nintendo Switch Online subscription service. With the inclusion of Tetris, the total number of NES/Famicom titles offered on the service will rise to 90, with 79 accessible in the Western regions. This initiative also aligns with a growing interest in NES Tetris as a competitive eSport.
