Donkey Kong Land 2 has officially been added to the Nintendo Switch Online Game Boy app as of November 25, 2024. This marks the second installment in the Donkey Kong Land trilogy to join the service, arriving just days after the addition of the original Donkey Kong Land. Originally released in 1996 for the Game Boy, Donkey Kong Land 2 was developed by Rare and serves as a handheld adaptation of the SNES classic Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy’s Kong Quest.
In Donkey Kong Land 2, players control Diddy Kong and Dixie Kong as they navigate through 40 levels to rescue Donkey Kong from Kaptain K. Rool. While the game draws heavily from its SNES counterpart in terms of themes and level design, it offers a unique experience tailored to the Game Boy’s hardware. Players can utilize Diddy’s cartwheels and Dixie’s ponytail glide to traverse challenging environments and defeat enemies.
Nintendo confirmed the game’s arrival with a short gameplay trailer, showcasing its mechanics and compatibility with the Game Boy app’s visual filters, including options for Game Boy, Game Boy Pocket, and Game Boy Color styles. Subscribers can access the game by updating their Game Boy app, either automatically or manually via the system’s software update settings.
The addition of Donkey Kong Land 2 comes during an exciting period for Donkey Kong fans, with other major releases and events like the Donkey Kong Country Returns HD launch in January and expansions at Super Nintendo World. Fans are now speculating whether Donkey Kong Land 3, the final entry in the trilogy, will also make its way to Nintendo Switch Online in the near future.
