Sega Saturn Receives Unique Shenmue Version by Frogbull

A talented modder known as Frogbull has created a version of Shenmue for the Sega Saturn, celebrating the console’s 30th anniversary and paying homage to the game’s origins. While not a full game, this project is a remarkable achievement, as it runs on real Saturn hardware and recreates elements of the iconic Dreamcast classic. The mod includes an arcade environment and emulated Sega coin-op classics, showcasing what Shenmue might have looked like had it remained a Saturn title.

This project holds historical significance for fans of the series, as Shenmue originally began development on the Sega Saturn in 1996 under the working title The Old Man and the Peach Tree. It was intended to be a Virtua Fighter RPG before evolving into the ambitious open-world game that debuted on the Dreamcast in 1999. Development was shifted to the more powerful Dreamcast in 1997, but footage of the early Saturn prototype was included as a bonus in Shenmue II. Frogbull’s work goes beyond that footage by creating a playable mock-up, offering a glimpse into what could have been.

This fan-made creation is not a complete version of Shenmue, but it demonstrates the technical capabilities of the Saturn and highlights the dedication of retro gaming enthusiasts. It’s a fascinating “what-if” scenario for one of gaming’s most influential titles and serves as a tribute to both Shenmue and the Sega Saturn’s legacy.
