Dragon Quest III Producer Advocates for Final Fantasy VI HD-2D

Masaaki Hayasaka, the producer of the Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, recently expressed his desire to see Final Fantasy VI receive the same HD-2D treatment. In an interview, Hayasaka revealed that Final Fantasy VI was a significant reference point during the development of Octopath Traveler, the first game to use the HD-2D art style. He noted that Final Fantasy VI had some of the “highest quality pixel art” of its time, which made it an ideal candidate for this modern visual style.

Hayasaka explained that the HD-2D aesthetic, which combines pixel-based graphics with high-definition textures and lighting, is highly compatible with games that were originally designed using pixel art. This compatibility is one reason why many fans feel that remakes of classic titles in this style are a “match made in heaven.” While there are no concrete plans for a Final Fantasy VI HD-2D remake at the moment, Hayasaka’s comments have sparked excitement among fans who would love to see the beloved 1994 RPG reimagined with modern visuals.

Despite this enthusiasm, Hayasaka also acknowledged concerns about oversaturating the market with HD-2D remakes, noting that Square Enix has released several games in this style over the past few years, including Octopath Traveler, Triangle Strategy, and Live A Live. Nevertheless, his personal interest in seeing Final Fantasy VI remade in HD-2D suggests that it could be a possibility in the future
