Yoshi-P Urges Square Enix to Revisit Two Classic PS1 RPGs

Naoki Yoshida, also known as Yoshi-P, the director and producer of Final Fantasy XIV and Final Fantasy XVI, has expressed his desire for Square Enix to re-release two classic PlayStation 1 RPGs: Vagrant Story and Final Fantasy Tactics. In a recent interview with 4Gamer, Yoshi-P emphasized that these games deserve to be experienced by future generations on modern platforms.

Key Details

  • Yoshi-P’s Wish: Yoshida, a self-professed fan of Yasumi Matsuno’s work (the director of both games), believes that Vagrant Story and Final Fantasy Tactics are landmark titles that should be preserved and made accessible to new audiences. Despite his general lack of interest in remakes or remasters, he feels strongly that these particular games should be re-released.

  • Current Status: While Final Fantasy Tactics has been the subject of remaster rumors for years—especially following the infamous 2021 Nvidia GeForce leak—no official announcements have been made. The game last saw a remake in 2007 with Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions on PSP. Meanwhile, Vagrant Story has not seen a re-release since its availability on PlayStation Network for PS3, PSP, and PS Vita in 2006.

  • Fan Demand: Both games are highly regarded by fans for their deep storytelling and strategic gameplay. Many players, including prominent figures like Final Fantasy XVI actor Ben Starr, have voiced their support for a remaster or re-release of these classics.

Despite Yoshi-P’s enthusiasm, there is no confirmation from Square Enix that these projects are currently in development. However, his public endorsement adds weight to the ongoing fan demand for these beloved titles to return in some form
