Micro Mages is an indie NES title released by developer Morphcat Games in 2019. It is notable for raising over $150,000 when it set up a crowdfunding campaign to get the game to physical carts. It has since been released on Steam and Itch.io and is still available to buy in physical NES form at French retro publisher Broke Studio. In an exciting development for the well-received title, Morphcat Games has announced Micro Mages will be heading to PlayStation on 23rd October 2024.
The game was inspired by the classic 8-bit action platformers so synonymous with the NES and features bold pixel art as well as 8-bit chiptunes. Micro Mages also uses some modern mechanics such as wall jumps and a ghost mode that kicks in when a player dies.
Along with the classic platforming gameplay, Micro Mages has eight worlds consisting of 26 levels and four simultaneous players using the NES FourScore. For the PlayStation release, four players will be able to join a game online or locally. It also has checkpoints and passwords to save your progress, secrets to discover and lots of spells to use by collecting fairies and other magical items.
