16-bit JRPG Starlight Legacy has new demo on PC

Starlight Legacy

Retro publisher EastAsiaSoft has announced a new demo for its upcoming JRPG Starlight Legacy. The announcement is part of October’s Steam Next Fest, which highlights upcoming games with new trailers and demos to showcase what gamers can look forward to.  The classic 16-bit era of JRPGs inspires the game that is set to release on PC and consoles next year. Starlight Legacy uses the traditional tropes of exploring an overworld map, visiting towns, item management and that all-important turn-based battle system.

The game’s story takes place in a post-medieval world where four kingdoms have been living in peace for a long time. Suddenly the Eternity Tree, which sustained the peace through its magic, is attacked and a period of unrest starts and new political groups begin to appear vying for power in a fragmented region. It’s up to two young heroes to restore the Eternity Tree and bring peace once again.

While the game is targeting those with a fondness for old-school RPGs, a few other game mechanics may appeal to those unfamiliar with the genre. Starlight Legacy will feature non-linear gameplay which means you can visit the hub towns in order with bosses’ abilities scaled up and down depending on how early you face them. There are also 3D flight sequences, that look a lot like Pilotwings, that players will use to traverse the different areas of the map.
